The Hike to Indian Point

Dom and I were sitting one morning debating what to do during a rare gorgeous sunny day in Portland, Oregon. As two wedding photographers we could sit and do “photography stuff” but we decided to take this opportunity and head outside to make the most of it! Plus, as the COVID-19 restrictions are getting lifted we wanted to get onto the trails before they start to get crowded with people. This hike was a good choice because we came across only 3 people during the entire 7 mile hike, how perfect right?
Originally we were planning to head to a well known hike in Washington State but found out everything was closed due to COVID-19 so we opened up the All Trails app and searched for hikes in The Gorge.
We clicked on the Indian Point hike and read the description which said there were two possible routes to the top. One was difficult and the other more difficult!! This got us excited and we packed some snacks and headed to the trail!
This was the first time we had penetrated the tree line where the large Eagle Creek forest fire happened back in 2017 and we were happily surprised to see just how much life there was! Even though there was a huge section of taller trees which were burned, the forrest floor is fully alive! You will see in the photos below what I am talking about.
The hike up the “more difficult” trail was no lie - it was tough! It is a steep climb for around 2-3 miles and barely lets up the whole time. We kept pushing to make it to the top when all of a sudden the wildflowers began to appear in unbelievable numbers and beauty! All colors from purple, pink and yellow to orange and white!
Once we got to the top we had to scramble out onto Indian Point for the epic views of The Gorge and all its breathtaking beauty! It is an easy scramble but beware some rocks can be loose so watch your footing!
This hike is a leg burner if you choose the “more difficult” trail but if you just want the views, take the “difficult” trail as it is a nice easy hike up the switchbacks to the top, and then you can hike down the steeper side, or return the way you came if your knees dislike a steep grade on the way down.
