How to Buy Your First Home as a Couple in 10 Steps - Overview

Picture this. You and your spouse are happily married, and you’ve been that way for a few years now, but you're both seeking some new adventure together. You've lived together, traveled together, bought a car together, and now it's time for that next great adventure. One day, while driving back to your apartment after stopping for coffee from your favorite coffee shop, you pass a home that has a giant for-sale sign in its front lawn. You and your spouse both see it and it instantly clicks. Life's next great adventure should be buying your first home together!

Now, take a step back and see if this picture represents you and your spouse. Does it? Maybe not perfectly. Perhaps you don’t like coffee and you much prefer the taste of tea. Or perhaps you haven’t traveled the world or bought a major asset together. It could be that the home you want to own and share together will be the starting place for all those other dreams to come true!

Dom and I know all about trying to get your married life started. We also experienced the same yearning and desire for new adventures to take on together! Starting Kate Holt Photography was a great way for us to grow together, and it’s been one heck of an adventure so far! Now however, Dom has started to explore new avenues and has found a refreshed sense of adventure in the real estate game! So, building off the connection that we already have with you all, we thought we would tie our two respective fields together for your benefit!

So, how exactly does a newly married couple buy their first home together? There are a lot of great guides online, and each one outlines a different set of steps to complete the same process. So, Dom and I thought it would be beneficial to you all if we did some research and wrote a series of blogs regarding this monumental step in your relationship together. The road to homeownership can be long and stressful if you don’t know how the process works. In an effort to alleviate as much of that as possible, Dom and I have decided to write this overview followed by a 10-blog series breaking down each of the 10-steps that we have devised for buying your first home.

Before we list our 10-step process for first time home buying, I want to provide you with some reasons as to why you should consider buying a home and what the benefits to owning a home are. In short there are many reasons to consider buying a home and the first is a pride of ownership. Unlike when you rent, owning a house is something to take pride in! The space in its entirety is yours to do what you want with, and owning a home is a huge milestone for couples! You should also consider that homes appreciate in value, and as an asset, the less you owe on the home, the more your equity grows! There are also tons of tax benefits to owning a home, such as deductions and preferential tax treatment.

The 10 Steps

  1. Decide that you want to buy a home

  2. How much can you afford

  3. Get pre-approved

  4. Find an agent

  5. Search for a home

  6. Make an offer

  7. Inspection

  8. Secure your loan

  9. Appraisal

  10. Paperwork, insurance and closing

Please note that while this list seems simple, it is only made to look so for the sake of making this overview less intimidating. Dom and I have researched many key elements to each of these 10-steps and those elements will be brought up in greater detail in each of the corresponding blogs! Dom and I are so excited to offer some assistance in your search for life’s next great adventure over the next few weeks! For now, sit-back, relax and get ready to buy your first home!
