Anne and Ryan’s intimate backyard wedding was one of those moments that touched my heart and left me feeling beyond grateful for the opportunity to document their love.

A Memorable First Meeting with Anne

From the moment I met Anne, I knew we were going to have an amazing time together. She arrived a little late, breathlessly jumping into my Jeep Cherokee in her wedding attire, and immediately apologized while telling me how she and her sister got sidetracked doing burpees that morning. Yes, you read that right—burpees before a wedding! 😊 Right then, I knew Anne was my kind of bride. (And for the record, I totally get it—I was also late to my own wedding hair appointment after an impromptu squat session with my maid of honor!)

What struck me most about Anne was her selflessness and her genuine interest in others. Even on her wedding day, she spent the entire drive to our first look location asking me questions about my life and my husband. It’s no surprise that when paired with Ryan, these two make the perfect couple.

Ryan’s Involvement in the Wedding Planning

Ryan is the kind of groom who’s as involved in the wedding planning process as his bride, which is a rare and beautiful thing to see! I had connected with him online and we had exchanged a few emails, but it wasn’t until their backyard wedding that I had the pleasure of meeting them both in person. Walking into Ryan’s parents’ stunning Eugene home, I was greeted by him and given a tour of the intimate space they had created for their ceremony. It was clear how much love and thought went into every detail.

A Wedding During Challenging Times

Like many couples in 2020, Anne and Ryan had to make some difficult decisions about their wedding plans. They originally intended to have a large celebration with family and friends, but due to the circumstances, they decided to have a small, intimate ceremony to start their married life surrounded by their closest loved ones. Though their celebration was smaller than initially planned, the love and joy that filled the air were undeniable.

As a wedding photographer, I often focus on capturing the little details—like the perfect placement of shoes or the intricate lace on a wedding dress. These moments are important and beautiful, but what truly makes a wedding special is the love between the couple and the people who surround them.

Standing in the backyard of Anne’s parents’ home, watching her marry the love of her life, I couldn’t help but feel the gravity of the moment. With only a small group of family members present, it was clear that Anne and Ryan’s ceremony meant the world to everyone there, especially given the circumstances. I spoke briefly with one of Anne’s closest friends, who had made the journey despite the challenges, and it was evident how much this day meant to everyone.
