Why I Prefer Canon

I have shot hundreds of thousands of photos over the last decade.

Seriously, I did some quick math and calculated that I have shot over 500,000 photos alone within the last three years or so. Throughout that time I’ve had one main camera, and throughout my decade of experience I’ve only shot work on one brand of bodies: that being Canon.

Don’t get me wrong, I have no quarrel with any other brands of camera but, I am stuck-in-my-ways so to speak. My first camera was a Canon and I've been a fan girl ever since. That said, I don’t consider myself to have a wealth of technical information on why Canon is a “superior” brand of camera. I do however have many years of experience with the brand and their cameras, and I think that I can honestly say I won’t leave.

The reason for that is because it’s what I’m used to and that’s about it. I love the way the camera works, and I’m used to its layouts both inside and outside the body (meaning the menus and physical buttons). One of Canon's strengths is that they have a predictable UI. They consistently deliver new cameras that act the same as the old ones! Better tech inside sure, but the layout is generally unaltered, from the buttons to the menu, and that’s really nice!

Canon is also known throughout the world for its reliability, something that I can say is top notch! My 5D Mark IV consistently produces exceptional quality photos shoot after shoot. Before you say that image quality has a lot to do with other factors, which is true, I shoot with a Canon body and loads of Canon lenses. At the price point my camera gear sits at, I have no complaints with the quality of work I can produce!

Another strength of Canon’s is in their color science. Now for the camera savvy of you out there, you’ll already know what I mean when I say, “color science”. For the rest of you, here is the quick and dirty: Color science refers to the colors produced by a camera, through a variety of means (lenses, filters, etc.), which creates a certain “feel” so to speak; the color style of each camera/brand. This is done mostly through the process of placing filters on the camera's image sensor known as the “Bayer filter mosaic” process. It turns out that color scientists wouldn’t actually consider Canon to have the most accurate color science, however they are considered to have the most visually pleasing color science. It’s something that Canon Camera are very good at creating!

Finally, I will note that Canon does not produce the most cutting-edge technology, and that’s because they don’t need to! They don’t need to take risks as they are already one of the greatest camera manufacturers in the world! So, if you’re looking for something new and exciting that hasn’t been done before, Canon might not be right for you. But, if you want stability, peace of mind and a killer camera that will produce stunning work every time, then Canon is the right tool for the job!

That’s not to say that other brands aren’t just as good, in fact you’d be hard pressed to find solid evidence that one brand stands above the rest in every category. Each company has its own unique process, style and techniques, which they employ to create new technology for us photographers to enjoy! Obviously, all the thoughts contained within this blog are my own. They are my conclusions from the limited research I have done into the brand and through nearly a decade of shooting with Canon in the wedding industry and beyond! I hope you found this enjoyable and informative!
