Getting married and getting gorgeous engagement photos is a dream come true. Yup, that is true for us girls but the guys may not feel the exact same way. I am sure you have noticed that our men are not always eager and willing to jump in front of the camera let alone do a professional engagement session! It could be for many reasons but we can boil it all down to just one thing - they haven’t had an amazing photography experience yet!

That is right! When you have fun doing something you usually want to do it again? Or when you feel accomplished in something you will want to give it another shot? Right? That is the same with your engagement photos and the dominating theme of these five basic tips to prep your groom for your engagement session - have fun and give him a win at it!

So let’s dig in to the tips that you can put into action to help him enjoy the experience from beginning to end!

1. Be patient and encouraging.

You may know what you want out of the session after scrolling through Pinterest and digesting all you can but your groom probably not so much. He may be nervous before your engagement session so encourage him and keep in view the fun you will have together. He will be learning during the engagement session - just like you - so being encouraging through the learning process and patient during the moments of trying to figure things out.

2. Go over the purpose of an engagement session with him.

The main goal of your engagement session should be allowing you and your soon to be husband to get to know your wedding photographer and to get comfortable being in front of the camera! On your wedding day your wedding photographer is going to be your wedding day paparazzi so being super relaxed with a camera around is key! Let him know that and make sure he knows it isn’t a test of how he looks or if he is the perfect model. Of course, after the session you will both feel amazing and just like models but don’t make that your main focus.

3. Show him some engagement session galleries that you love.

The unknown is something which can cause nerves and worry and you don’t want that leading up to your engagement session. So head to your photographers website and blog to show him exactly what an engagement session is and the type of photos you are excited about. Take 15 minutes to empower him and get him excited about it. Let him know why you are excited and why you chose your photographer!

4. Make a date night out of it.

You just got engaged so you may as well celebrate! Make a date night out of your engagement session! That way it is more casual and not as serious as just heading out to get professional photos taken. Get some coffee before, take a nice walk together, and get dinner after. If you are enjoying each other before hand it will just flow right into your engagement shoot together!

5. Make it about you guys and your love story.

Your engagement session should be about you guys and your love for each other. Find a way to make it special and about you both. Maybe choose a location that means something to you both or think of 5 things you love about him and tell him that during the engagement session. Those little actions that are truly you will make him feel more relaxed and enjoy the time with you.

Save this for reference and share to your gals who are getting engaged or have an engagement session coming up.
