Q&A With a Wedding Videographer

DC_2020-4.jpg

Are you considering hiring a videographer? Are you unsure if it is the right thing for you or what type of a video you can expect?

As a wedding photographer I’ve developed a relationship with one particular videography company in Portland for their professionalism, ease to work with and above and beyond customer service: Casperson Productions.

The photographer/videographer relationship can be a contentious one, so finding two of these vendors who work well together is critical if you are considering hiring both for your wedding.

I thought sitting down with Dane, owner of Casperson Productions for a Q+A would be helpful for those couples who are considering adding a videography element to their wedding day, so check out the interview below, and if you are looking for an excellent videographer in the Portland area, check out the link at the end of this blog for Dane’s contact info!

Q+A with Dane from

Casperson Productions:

When a couple is deciding whether or not to budget in videography on their wedding day what are some things that they should consider?

“I think the most important thing to consider when budgeting in videography, is what kind of video you want. There are essentially two kinds of wedding videos that 90+ percent of couples who get a video end up getting. There is a short form video, that is typically between 4 and 8 minutes long depending on which company you hire and what events are planned for the day and then there are full length videos. Full length films have recordings that span the entirety of all the major events. It's more expensive to get a full length film, so if you really want to get a full length film, so you can watch the toasts again, and see your full ceremony, you're going to want to budget in a little more for video. Whereas if you're after just a short form video, those are typically more affordable, since the process of creating short form videos is much less involved.”

As a videographer, what is your favorite thing about creating a wedding video for your customers?

“Gosh, there is so much to like about creating videos for couples, I get to spend time with super cool people, at all kinds of amazing places. Ultimately what I really love the most is that every wedding, and every couple is different. Some couples are super sweet and romantic, some are adventurous, others inspire me with their incredible focus and attention to detail. At the end of the day, every couple is unique, and getting to tell people's unique stories day in and day out is an incredible honor, and it's an incredibly cool experience every single time.”

Can you give me an example of a time as a videographer you were able to go above and beyond for a couple to create an amazing experience for them?

“I think one of the coolest chances I had to go above and beyond was when an incredibly accomplished gentleman named Logwone approached me about making a secret (surprise) music video of a song he had written for his soon to be wife. We sat down, made a game plan for putting the video together, and spent two days shooting an epic music video. The reaction at the wedding when he revealed his original song was one of the most touching moments I have had the pleasure of being a part of.”

What is the most popular type of videography your couples choose and what is the average cost of videography services you offer?

“Most people tend to go with a short film, or a full length film (its honestly a 50/50 split) and pricing tends to range from 1500, to a little over 3000.”

3-D Videography is becoming an option for couples; what is this and if a couple chose to add this into their videography package what would they expect as the final product?

“So I personally offer 360 degree virtual reality event recordings and what we do for those is: we take a 360 camera, and record things like the ceremony and the toast and the first dance, etc. Along with getting some good clean high quality audio from separate sources. The final product is honestly a bit niche, but its also pretty amazing. If you have a virtual reality headset, you can put on the virtual reality goggles and watch the wedding as if you were a guest at the event. looking all around, seeing the crowd, the main event, really it catches everything. It is a really unique and cool experience to be able to literally step back into your wedding day with virtual reality.”

When searching for a videographer, what are the most important things a couple should look for or ask about?

“I think ultimately it's about finding someone who knows their stuff forward and backward. A wedding only happens once, and it happens fast, having the experience to capture it, and capture it well is really important. I always advise people to ask a videographer about audio, if a videographer can tell you about all the geeky nonsense they do to make sure they get good clean audio during a wedding, they have probably shot enough weddings to deliver a pretty good product.”

What advice would you give a couple about their wedding day when adding in a videography element?

“We tend to just make things happen for our couples, we don't want them to have to worry about anything they don't need to. So if you're looking to get a video, I would say, get in touch early with your video team, lock them in, and check it off the list.”

Why did you become a wedding videographer and what is your favorite part of your job?

“I actually kind of stumbled into wedding videography, I never planned on becoming a wedding videographer, but I am sure glad I ended up becoming one. I got a summer job working for a well established wedding video production company after I graduated from film school, I thought I would be there for a year and move on to TV, but I fell in love with creating wedding videos. A few years later I started my own company and never looked back. There is nothing I would rather do. I literally love everything about it, from being on site on the wedding day itself, to putting together the edits, I couldn't imagine doing anything else :-) ”
