Outfit Tips for Family Mini Sessions

What is a mini session? Usually they are a 20-30 minute session with you and your family. The reason most families choose a mini session is because they are only looking for a handful of photos for holiday cards and 20 minutes of photos for a child is more bearable than a whole hour or more! We also know that planning outfits for a mini session can be stressful so we put together this short blog to cover some important aspects to help make it a more enjoyable experience!

Tip 1

Neutrals, Off-Whites and Solids are best!

Dress everyone accordingly but then add in some pops of coordinating colors. Solids, neutrals and whites look great when paired together and also can offer a splash of color without being too distracting.

Tip 2

Complement each other but don’t match!

The days of all the boys matching and all the girls matching is long gone. Instead of matching, go for colors that compliment each other overall. For instance, soft colors (light blue, gray, blush) or warm colors (brown, orange, burgundy), If you want colorful images, then you should choose a more vivid color scheme for your outfits!

Tip 3

Plan for the weather!

This is an important one because if you have kids and dress them for a warm day but it turns out to be raining or cold they will be pretty uncomfortable. All the smiles and laughs that you were hoping for may not become a reality. If it might be cold or rainy make sure to pack appropriate clothes and bring jackets or layers for any situation!

Tip 4

Avoid graphic tees.

I am sure you are doing a mini family session for photos to send out in Christmas/Holiday cards or even to hang on your wall at home so tees with large graphic prints will be quite distracting and will remove from the overall aesthetic feel of your photos.

Tip 5

Let your kids have some input.

If your son doesn’t like a bowtie, don’t make him wear it. If your daughter wants to wear a dress instead of pants, let her. Unhappy kids means unhappy photos so do what you can to keep the smiles on their faces!

Tip 6

Add in some cute accessories!

For the girls maybe add in a cute head band or bow. For the boys you could have suspenders or a cute bowtie.
